Our Teachers
Kristel Chilton
Yoga has been a blessing to me since discovering my first class and cultivating my passion nearly 20 years ago. It has been the cornerstone in helping me manage through times of stress and anxiety, as well as from physical ailments and injuries including reoccurring knee, shoulder and neck pain. My practice, not only physical but mental, continues to strengthen me both in body and mind each new day.
It has been my dream to open a yoga studio since retiring from my career as an Engineer after the birth of my daughter in 2011. I completed my 200 hr YTT certification in 2013 during my pregnancy with my son and am currently working toward completing my 500 hr YTT by the end of this year.
My family of four relocated to the Bellingham area in 2020 where we love and embrace the abundance of adventures the beautiful Pacific Northwest provides. When I’m not at the studio, you may find me out boating and fishing, camping and exploring with family and friends, or just out in the garden.
I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to share in your yoga journey and to evolve Barkley Yoga with Our Community, and I look forward to the many classes, workshops, retreats and explorations along the way.
Kate Loerzel
Kate is been practicing yoga for over 12 years. A few years after discovering yoga, she decided to join her passion by getting her 200hr RYS certification. Give her a hot room and intense Vinyasa any day to cleanse her soul!
When the pandemic began and gyms closed, Kate sought out other avenues of growth. She earned her Assisted Stretch Certification. The change in pace was well suited to her life goals of learning the best practices of resetting the body.
Yoga continues to bring joy and new opportunities for growth in her every day life. Her two young boys also bring fun challenges to all hours of the day.
Louis Johnson
My yoga journey began in 2017 as I was searching for ways to repair my body after many years of injuries and many surgeries. I was so deeply touched by my first class that my practice began right then and continues to this day. My YTT 200 training was completed in 2019 at the Flux Power Yoga Academy in Bellingham WA, in the Baptiste Methodology. I have since taught over 500 hours of Baptiste and Ashtanga inspired Vinyasa classes and over 250 hours of classic, deep opening Yin.
My love for sharing yoga comes from a place of deep gratitude and my goal is always to invite you to experience your journey in the most uninterrupted way, while offering you the space to grow and challenge yourself when those opportunities appear for you. I have taught at many area studios and gyms here in Bellingham WA and teach from time to time in the great state of Arizona where I spend time every year.
Sydney Loy
I started my yoga journey 5 years ago when I was battling severe anxiety and dissociation from my body. I was extremely shy and unsure of myself or my purpose, but in my attempt to find connection I decided to take my first yoga class while working as an au pair in Greece. It was so out of my comfort zone, but the teacher was warm and accepting. I was moved by the poetry of the Vinyasa class, and the energetic release that I experienced while moving and integrating breath. I came back to the States excited to start my teacher training journey, and it has continued to transform everything in my life since. Yoga taught me to show up authentically and live from a place of embodiment. As I went through teacher training and explored the profound truths of yogic knowledge and asana practice, I grew a deeper respect for myself and the lives around me. On a physical level, I loved how yoga builds strength in your body and improves your psycho-physical alignment. That along with diving into the ethics of yoga has encouraged me to reflect and seek out my truest expression and develop a deep reverence for the lives and truths of others. In my classes now, I aim to honor the knowledge passed down from Southeast Asia, as well as cultivate a supportive, safe, and accessible class setting. I encourage students to tap into their creative expression through intuitive movement and exploration of breath. I adore sharing this lifechanging practice and connecting with people from all walks of life as I do so. I recognize yoga is an intimate journey, and my role is to support you every step of the way.
Merion Wright
Merion’s classes are rooted in the connection between breath and movement. You can expect dynamic, energetic sequencing with opportunities for heat building, play and balance exploration. She loves using subtle cues and anatomical awareness to foster embodiment and a very present practice. Yoga asana has been an integral part of Merion’s movement practice for over 15 years, initially as a complement to all of the other outdoor movement activities she loves and eventually proving to be so much more. Merion’s goal in her classes is to create space for students to listen to their bodies and reconnect with themselves, while offering guidance and support through challenging places. When she’s not on her mat, you can find her adventuring outside with her family, baking bread, or storming through a good book.
Anna Badalamenti
Anna is excited to share in your yoga journey! I started practicing yoga 13 years ago as a complement to dance and theater activities. My relationship with yoga has shifted and evolved over time, but it has always been a positive and grounding pillar. The best decision I made was to deepen my practice with 200-hr YTT in the spring of 2020 during the early months of the pandemic. It was during this time I discovered the power of yoga and yogic principles as a tool for self-care, nourishment and staying present. I strive to incorporate these aspects into my classes to pass along to others. See you on the mat!
Anna Badalamenti
My yoga journey started 15 years ago and through all this time, I’ve continued to come back to my practice. Yoga has been my tool to manage stress and anxiety in addition to being a practice to keep my body strong. I’ve used yoga as a lens to modify the way I identify with the natural world and the way I connect with each being within it. My love and devotion for yoga drove me to complete my 200YTT in 2022 so I could share this practice with others within our community.
My personal practice is deeply rooted in Bhakti Yoga, the yoga of love and devotion. Through this personal practice, I’ve devoted myself to offering this practice to anyone I can reach. It is my honor to serve anyone who is looking for someone to lead them though their asana practice. It is very important to me to hold an inclusive space in which people feel welcome and safe – my offerings will support your practice, wherever that is today. I like to curate a unique experience for each class which will offer you a challenge to encourage body strengthening and flexibility. You can expect my classes to be lighthearted, fun, and energetic while still holding space for mindful breathing and movement meditation.
As a white woman teaching asana classes, I feel it important to honor the roots of this practice by acknowledging the long lineages of yoga. I will regularly offer Sanskrit in addition to English posture names and occasionally sprinkle in some Vedic philosophy/literature to offer a theme to my classes. On rare occasions, you might also catch me offering some lite mantra at the end of practice.
I hope that with each class you take a piece of this ancient tradition with you.
Om Shanti Shanti Shanti – Peace Peace Peace
